Roads in the UK are generally of a very good standard – all are paved (bar those in very rural areas), though the actual surface quality can vary a great deal. The vast majority are in very good condition though, and repairs on poorer surfaces are common. Local bus services are comprehensive, and though Brits may complain about unreliability, they do usually run on time – even if they don’t, there are enough alternatives to make up for it. Nationwide coach services also operate widely, and budget trips can get a person across the whole country for just a few pounds, sacrificing comfort for economy. Taxis are available throughout the country, and yes – the iconic black cabs are real, and they can be hired. Fares are reasonable in the most part, though it has been known for tourists to be fleeced by some unscrupulous types – ask the driver to turn the meter on before commencing a journey, or agree on a price beforehand. Other public transport available include the (again, iconic) Tube in London, as well as underground rail services in Liverpool, Newcastle and Glasgow and tram services in cities like Sheffield and Manchester. Rail services are comprehensive, cover the whole country and can offer very cheap, very comfortable travel with a selection of fare types and regular services. A number of discounts are available for different travellers, which can make journeys even cheaper than before. Again, as with buses, the UK’s rail network is much-maligned, and though services are perhaps not up to par with European counterparts, they work very well in their own right and offer some wonderful scenic routes of the country. Internal flights are offered by a number of operators to most major destinations throughout the UK, and flights can be chartered for most of the 300-plus paved runway airports in the country. Flights from budget operators such as Easyjet, BMIBaby and Ryanair have sometimes hit as low as £10 one way, making them comparable to train ticket prices. Waterway transport through the UK is available, though internal routes are dominated by trade and leisure cruises, less for pure transport reasons. Links to offshore islands, such as the Isle of Man, are comprehensive and regular, as well as affordable. Car Hire http://avis.com/ http://www.hertz.com http://www.argusrentals.com/
